Recently when I was doing my Ecumenical visit to Grange Lea I was met with the following situation:
Some of the staff and residents had and were suffering from a bug. Result shortage of staff and extra work for the carers who were left. When I arrived it was coffee time. Offering to serve coffees was accepted as long as I did not visit certain rooms. Whilst on my rounds I spoke with staff and residents about the problem and as is my way had a few laughs. After a short time I was able to show residents my latest try at fancy knitting. This entailed holding the work and explaining the yarn to two blind ladies who were extremely interested.
Realising that the next hour or so covered lunchtime, I offered my services which were accepted. I set the tables helped those I could to their places all the while chatting and having a laugh. It was one lady’s birthday so we sang and blew out candles. Having helped to clear away I then came home. A number of residents thanked me for helping out as did the staff.
This may be seen by some as exploiting my work as Church Visitor. Believe me this is what it is all about. We are taught that Jesus washed the disciples feet. I served coffee and lunch. I am grateful for being given the opportunity to do God's will in any way that is shown to me.
