Challenged by a person not yet thirty how Christians know what the teachings of Jesus really were, demands careful thought. With so many Bible translations in the shops or on the internet how is it possible to be even certain which is correct? A valid question.

In February we referred to the Breeches Bible and how students of that period went to Geneva to consult Greek and Hebrew manuscripts alongside the Roman version of the day. They searched for accuracy.

Have we sacrificed that quest for truth in seeking to make the language more appealing to the age in which we live? Without doubt the market has been flooded with translations that seek to make the Bible easier to understand. Sadly this can lead to a watering down of the truth for with each attempt we may depart further from the original.

Perhaps the answer lies in the quotation "Seek and ye shall find ... etc". After all it’s not in the binding, or the paper, or the screen or the recording but how the spirit of truth speaks to us through the word and that word should be as accurate as the human structure can make it.
